The Taliban government has prohibited the operation of mobile money changers in Sarai Shahzada, Afghanistan's largest currency exchange market.
According to a report by Tarz Press, a letter circulated to the media yesterday, signed by the Ministry of Interior, the Intelligence Directorate, the Central Bank, and the Money Changers' Union, states that foreign currency auctions ("boli") in Sarai Shahzada are banned. The specific reason for this decision was not clarified in the letter. There are now concerns that this decree will leave hundreds of mobile money changers within Sarai Shahzada unemployed. In addition to established financial service companies and currency exchange businesses within Sarai Shahzada, many individuals have been running mobile money-changing operations for years.
