For the first time, a U.S. delegation has traveled to Afghanistan and met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s foreign minister. According to a Taliban Foreign Ministry statement, the delegation included Zalmay Khalilzad, former U.S. envoy for Afghanistan, and Donald Trump’s special representative for hostage affairs.
The Taliban said the talks covered bilateral relations between Afghanistan and the U.S., prisoner releases, and consular services for Afghans in America. In the statement, Muttaqi is quoted as saying, “We want positive ties with all parties. It’s crucial that Afghanistan and the U.S. resolve their differences through dialogue.”
He added that both nations must move beyond the fallout of the 20-year war and build new, peace-based relations. This marks the first U.S. delegation visit to Kabul since the Taliban took power in August 2021. No further details have emerged, and U.S. officials have yet to comment.
