A day after Sergey Shoigu, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, met with Taliban officials in Kabul, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized the importance of ties with the Taliban for Moscow’s regional strategy.

On Tuesday, November 26, Peskov stated in a press briefing in Moscow that Russia aims to maintain its connection with the Taliban, who currently lead Afghanistan. He remarked, “Strengthening relations with Afghanistan’s leadership and the forces [Taliban] in power there is very important for Russia.”

The statement followed Sergey Shoigu’s unannounced visit to Kabul on Monday, during which he engaged with key Taliban political and security leaders. According to Russian media, Shoigu discussed security, economic, and regional issues with Taliban officials.

The Taliban reportedly requested Shoigu’s assistance in advocating for the release of Afghanistan’s frozen funds held in American banks. Additionally, a statement from the Taliban’s official office noted Shoigu’s interest in economic cooperation, particularly in transit and railway development with Afghanistan.
