Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Envoy for Afghan Women, has stated that the path to both domestic and international legitimacy for the Taliban lies in respecting the rights of the Afghan people, referencing the Taliban’s new Propagating Virtue and Preventing Vice law.
Tarz Press – In a brief note on X, Amiri wrote that while Washington's support for the Afghan people remains steadfast, patience with the Taliban is running out. She added that she had raised her concerns regarding the Taliban's new law with officials from Qatar and the UAE, describing it as a complete erasure of Afghan women from society. She emphasized that "The way to legitimacy domestically and internationally is respecting the rights of the Afghan people."
This comes amid widespread national and international backlash against the Taliban's Propagating Virtue and Preventing Vice law. Many countries have condemned the law, stating that reconciliation with the Taliban is not feasible. The United Nations also recently stated that the law presents a troubling outlook and is undeserving of the Afghan people.
