Officials from Uzbekistan have announced the start of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, hosted in Tashkent, with a focus on combating "new security threats."
Tarz Press – This marks the 10th international conference of the SCO, which began today, September 3, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and is expected to continue until September 6.
According to a press release sent to Tarz Press by the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Kabul, the conference brings together SCO members and observers to coordinate on counter-terrorism efforts against international terrorism and extremism. The conference will feature joint training exercises, named "Anti-Terrorism 2024 - Fighting Terrorism in the East," with participation from Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries. The press release states that these meetings and exercises are part of a series of annual programs that will be hosted by member states of the SCO and CIS countries.
The press release further notes: "The main objective of this summit is to establish a unified concept and approach to address new security threats to member states and to enhance international cooperation in this area." Although the press release does not provide specific details about the "new security threats," it is likely that the political developments and tensions in the region are considered among these threats, and the member states of the SCO will make decisions regarding them during the summit.
