A former official of the Islamic Republic of Iran, referring to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas in Tehran, admitted that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Ministry of Intelligence of Iran have failed in the intelligence domain.
Tarz Press– Abdolvahed Mousavi Lari, a former minister in the Iranian government, told Iranian media that Iran has suffered a defeat in intelligence, significantly lowering its standing among regional rivals.
Iranian media, quoting Mousavi Lari, wrote, "They came to the heart of Tehran and killed Ismail Haniyeh. Both the IRGC's intelligence unit and the Ministry of Intelligence failed." According to this former Iranian official, this failure has been particularly costly for Iran because Tehran's officials not only failed to save their "guest's life" but also could not foresee such an attack.
Mousavi Lari further mentioned that the increase in attacks—such as "Daesh's attacks on the parliament, Ruhollah Khomeini's mausoleum, and the army parade in Ahvaz"—all testify to the failure of Iran's intelligence forces. Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, was assassinated on July 31 while attending an inauguration ceremony for Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran. The attack occurred late at night in a highly secure hotel in central Tehran. Iranian officials have not yet been able to clarify how the assassination was carried out. Initial investigations by the IRGC indicated he was killed by a projectile from the air, but later reports suggested that explosives planted in the room were responsible. However, the exact details of Ismail Haniyeh's assassination in the heart of Tehran remain unclear, although Tehran has blamed Israel for the act.
