For the first time, the Taliban have released details about the number of women imprisoned under their rule, revealing that at least 1,000 women are currently held in Taliban prisons.
Tarz Press: Officials from the Taliban's prison administration made this statement on Sunday during a meeting in Kabul, stating that there are currently between 10,000 to 11,000 prisoners in their facilities, including around 1,000 women. Speaking at a Taliban accountability program on August 31, these officials also noted that among the inmates are between 800 to 900 children. In addition to this, they mentioned that approximately 10,000 to 12,000 more individuals are being held in the group's detention centers.
While the Taliban's prison authorities denied any allegations of torture in their prisons, they did not provide further details on how the legal rights of these women are being addressed. Human rights organizations have previously expressed concern about the human rights conditions of female prisoners under Taliban control, citing reports of mistreatment and sexual assault by Taliban forces.
