Anas Haqqani, a senior Taliban member, has reacted to the mistreatment of Afghan refugees in Iran, stating that anti-refugee sentiment and the violation of the human rights of Afghans residing in Iran are unacceptable.
Tarz Press – This is the first time a Taliban official has openly warned the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding what he described as "the violation of human rights and anti-refugee sentiment" following several weeks of reports about the humiliation and mistreatment of Afghan refugees.
On Thursday, August 8, Anas Haqqani wrote on X that the Taliban are grateful for the hospitality and shelter provided by host countries, "but anti-refugee sentiment and the violation of the human rights of Afghan refugees are unacceptable."
The Taliban official expressed hope that anti-refugee sentiment would be stopped as soon as possible and that their cases would be handled legally. This comes amid numerous recent reports of the mistreatment, humiliation, and torture of Afghan refugees by Iranian police forces. Human rights organizations had previously called on the Islamic Republic of Iran to abandon its anti-refugee stance and comply with international laws regarding refugee rights.
