The United States has stated that it does not expect Masoud Pezeshkian's role as the new president of Iran to lead to significant changes in Tehran's policy direction or its adherence to the rights of its citizens.
Vedant Patel, Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, told reporters in a press conference on Monday that the leadership of Iran will be judged based on actions, not words. Patel added, "We are going to judge, just as we always have, Iran's leadership by their actions, not by their words or even claims of moderation or claims of wanting better ties."
This comes as Masoud Pezeshkian is soon to be inaugurated as the new president of Iran. Tehran has also invited the Taliban to attend the ceremony. Although Masoud Pezeshkian has no direct experience in foreign policy, during his election campaigns, he promised to employ Iran's elite diplomats for his foreign policy programs. This is his only promise to the citizens of Iran that has raised hopes for relatively better relations with the West.
