The U.S. Congress Human Rights Commission has stated that since August 2021, the condition of Afghan women under Taliban rule has significantly deteriorated. To address the "severe and dehumanizing restrictions imposed by the Taliban," the commission plans to hold a joint hearing on July 30, inviting human rights organizations and women's rights advocates to join.
The statement on the commission's website reads: "Prohibiting women from working and denial of access to education have starkly reduced their ability to participate in Afghan public life and tightened controls on women’s private lives."
The hearing will feature Afghan girls and human rights activists, including Mitra Mehran from Amnesty International, Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Representative for Women, and Heather Barr, Deputy Director of the Women's Rights Division at Human Rights Watch. This comes as the Taliban regime in Afghanistan marks its third anniversary on August 15, 2024. According to women's rights organizations, restrictions on Afghan women have increased daily over the past three years, completely stripping them of their social and individual freedoms.
