French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged that Afghan women have suffered the most from the U.S. decision to withdraw from Afghanistan and are paying a heavy price daily.
According to Tarz Press, Macron made these remarks in an interview with RFE/RL's Radio Azadi, broadcast on Tuesday, July 23. Macron stated: We did what we could, tried to accept refugees, and stood by the people of Afghanistan. He admitted that Afghan women and girls are the most affected by the U.S. withdrawal decision and urged them to remain hopeful for the future. During nearly three years of Taliban rule, Afghan women have borne the brunt of the pressure. Experts believe that the Taliban use women as leverage to achieve their demands from the international community, expecting their regime to be recognized in exchange for women's education and employment—an issue yet to be explicitly addressed.
