Dmitry Zhirnov, the Russian Ambassador to Kabul, stated in an exclusive interview with Russian news agency TASS that Moscow does not rule out the possibility of opening more consulates in Afghanistan.
According to Tarz Press, Zhirnov said on Saturday, July 20, "Currently, there is no need for this, but nothing can be ruled out in the future." He emphasized the long-standing diplomatic relations between Kabul and Moscow and noted that these relations have now expanded. Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin mentioned at the Shanghai summit that the Taliban are Moscow's allies in combating terrorism.
Despite maintaining its embassy in Kabul and handing over the Afghan embassy in Moscow to Taliban representatives after the fall of the Afghan government on August 15, 2021, Russia has not officially recognized the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan.
