The Afghanistan Journalists Center reports that threats and pressure on Afghan journalists by the Taliban have intensified.
According to Tarz Press, the center expressed concern over the rising threats against journalists in Afghanistan, noting that in the first half of 2024, around 90 cases of arrests and threats against journalists were recorded, all attributed to the Taliban. The center's statement mentions that one journalist detained by the Taliban in Ghazni last spring remains in custody. Additionally, seven media outlets, including two private ones, have been shut down by the Taliban for various reasons during this period.
The center also highlighted increased monitoring of media work and content, with Taliban intelligence officials directly and indirectly interfering in the operations and broadcast content of media outlets. Furthermore, the center reported that some journalists and media outlets in the southern and eastern parts of the country have been threatened by the Taliban for airing programs that included women's voices or background music. The Taliban have not yet responded to this report from the Afghanistan Journalists Center.
