As U.S. President Donald Trump plans to suspend all financial assistance to the Taliban, the group has called on UNAMA’s head to ensure the continuation of international aid to Afghanistan.
Hafiz Zia Ahmad, Deputy Spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced on his X account that Amir Khan Muttaqi held talks with Roza Otunbayeva, head of UNAMA and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, regarding “Afghanistan’s economic growth, humanitarian and development aid, and the effective distribution of such assistance.”
Muttaqi emphasized the importance of continued international aid, stressing that the needs of the Afghan people should remain a priority. This appeal comes amidst President Trump’s recent decision to suspend humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, citing concerns that such assistance may not reach the intended beneficiaries.
One day before his inauguration, President Trump labeled the Taliban as “enemies” and insisted that any form of aid to the group should cease. He also vowed to reclaim all U.S. military equipment currently in the Taliban’s possession.
