Local sources in Baghlan Province have confirmed that on Tuesday evening, January 7, two religious scholars were attacked while leaving a mosque on their way to a gathering. In the attack, Abdul Razaq was killed, and Hamdullah, the central Baghlan district’s imam, sustained severe injuries.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, declaring that the group had targeted two Taliban members. The statement noted that one person was killed and another wounded as a result of the assault.
In contrast, the Taliban attributed the attack to personal enmity, denying any link to broader ideological conflicts. This incident follows another attack earlier in the month of Qaws on a Sufi worship site in the Nahreen district of Baghlan. That assault resulted in 10 fatalities, with ISIS also claiming responsibility.
The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in Afghanistan as violence between Taliban factions and ISIS continues to claim lives across the country.
