Following recent developments in Syria, Kareem Khurram, a prominent political figure and former chief of staff to Afghanistan’s ex-president Hamid Karzai, has remarked that the situation in Syria serves as a significant lesson for “us Afghans.”
Referring to the monopolistic governance of Bashar al-Assad, Khurram wrote on his X account that “domestic grievances must never remain unresolved.”
Khurram, who played a key role in Afghanistan’s post-2001 peace and conflict management under Karzai’s administration, emphasized that “governments must first and foremost make peace with their own people.” While he did not mention the Taliban explicitly, he drew a parallel to the 2001 Bonn Conference as an example akin to Syria’s ongoing challenges.
This statement comes amidst widespread dissatisfaction with the current Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Observers believe Khurram’s remarks were aimed at conveying a message to the Taliban leadership, urging them to address domestic discontent before it escalates further.
