The German government has reacted to the Taliban’s recent decision to ban medical education for Afghan women, stating that this move signifies the destruction of Afghanistan’s future.
Annalena Baerbock, Germany’s Foreign Minister, expressed her concerns on Monday, December 4, via her X account. She stated, “Life for women in Afghanistan was already like a prison, and By banning midwifery education, the Taliban are literally erasing Afghanistan’s future.”
Baerbock also emphasized that suspending medical education for Afghan women not only jeopardizes the provision of basic healthcare services but also threatens the lives of women and patients across Afghanistan.
Mullah Hibatullah, the Taliban leader, announced on Monday that Afghan girls would no longer be allowed to pursue medical studies, and as of Tuesday, women are barred from entering all medical institutions for further education. The Taliban have yet to provide a specific reason for this decision.
