Tarz Press: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that nine out of every ten cases of journalist murders worldwide remain unpunished. Guterres urged governments to take immediate action to change this situation.

In a post on his X account on Saturday, November 2, Guterres emphasized that impunity is the main reason behind the increase in violence against journalists globally. He called on governments to take steps to protect journalists, investigate crimes against them, and prosecute perpetrators.

Afghanistan is among the countries where journalists are severely suppressed, and many cases involving them remain unresolved. Recently, the Afghan Journalists Center (AFJC) reported that around 128 journalists and media workers have been killed in Afghanistan over the past two decades, including 28 female journalists who lost their lives due to various conflicts and organized crimes in the country.

On Friday, November 1, AFJC stated that justice has yet to be served in these cases and that a culture of impunity has significantly contributed to the suppression of journalists. The organization called for an end to impunity for crimes against journalists, revealing that over the past three years of Taliban rule, they have documented 447 violations of journalists’ rights, including three killings, 220 detentions, and instances of violence.

The AFJC further noted that the Taliban has imposed unprecedented restrictions on journalists and media, urging the repeal of regulations that limit journalists’ and media outlets’ fundamental rights.

Notably, Saturday, November 2, marks the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
