The European Parliament has passed a resolution condemning the normalization of relations between certain unnamed countries and the Taliban, calling for new sanctions against officials of the group.
In the resolution issued on Thursday, September 19, the European Parliament also called for the Taliban's treatment of women in Afghanistan to be officially recognized as "gender apartheid." Members of the European Parliament expressed solidarity with Afghan women and strongly criticized the Taliban's policies toward them, labeling these actions as inhumane. The resolution highlighted that "Afghan women face forced marriages, early marriages, and gender-based violence."
The European Parliament also noted that as a pressure tactic, key Taliban members could be brought before an international court to be questioned about their harsh policies against women in Afghanistan.
