Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the country’s newly elected chancellor, has strongly criticized what he called “U.S. interference in Germany’s election process.” In his victory speech, he warned European nations that the United States no longer prioritizes Europe’s future as it once did, urging the continent to pursue greater independence.

In the early hours of Monday, February 24, Germany’s election committee announced the final results. According to official figures, the CDU-Christian Social Union (CSU) coalition secured 28.52% of the votes, marking a 4.32% increase compared to the previous election. This victory strengthens the conservative bloc’s position in German politics and paves the way for Merz to swiftly form a new government.

Merz’s reaction to the election results included statements that were considered unprecedented, particularly among German conservatives. He criticized the open support of Donald Trump’s administration for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, calling such interference unacceptable for Germany.

The election took place amid heated debates on immigration policies, economic crises, and the ongoing war in Ukraine—key issues that dominated the campaign. With conservatives now in power, many expect significant shifts in Germany’s policies toward the European Union, the United States, and Russia.
