The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has issued a statement calling on the Taliban to allow Radio Kawoon Ghag to resume its broadcasts in Laghman province.
According to Tarz Press, the committee released a press statement from New York on July 9, urging Taliban intelligence to lift the ban imposed on Radio Kawoon Ghag in Mehtarlam city without any conditions. Beh Lih Yi, the head of the committee's Asia branch, stated, "The Taliban must stop the unprecedented suppression of media."
Enqelabi Yousafzai, the head of Radio Kawoon Ghag, told Tarz Press yesterday that officials from the Taliban's Intelligence and Culture Directorate entered the radio station's building on July 13 and expelled all its staff. Taliban authorities have claimed that the radio station in Mehtarlam was built on government property with foreign financial support, which they cited as the reason for its closure.
