Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. envoy to Afghanistan, stated that taxpayer funds should not be used to finance anti-American propaganda. In support of Elon Musk’s remarks on X (formerly Twitter), Khalilzad wrote that the activities of Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) should be thoroughly reviewed.

According to Khalilzad, “Several of their country-focused programs appear to be staffed by activists rather than journalists, who use the taxpayer-funded airtime to undermine and work against U.S. interests.” He further added that the government should prevent public funding from being used for such activities.

Earlier, Elon Musk, a millionaire advisor to President Donald Trump, suggested the shutdown of Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Both media outlets have dedicated broadcasting sections covering news from Afghanistan.
