New details have emerged about the complex operation of a suicide bomber who was able to target Khalil-ur-Rehman Haqqani, a senior Taliban official, at the group’s Ministry headquarters on Wednesday, December 11.
According to informed sources, the attacker skillfully bypassed metal detectors at checkpoints by claiming that he had undergone surgery on his arm and had a steel rod implanted. This tactic allowed him to reach his target undetected.
The primary target of this suicide attack was Khalil-ur-Rehman Haqqani, a senior Taliban figure and the acting Minister of Refugees for the group, who was killed instantly in the initial blast. While no group has officially claimed responsibility for the attack, the Taliban have stated that it was carried out by “Khawarij,” their term for ISIS.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesperson, released a statement today confirming that Khalil-ur-Rehman Haqqani, the Taliban’s Minister of Refugees, had been killed in what he described as a “barbaric ISIS attack.” Mujahid called Haqqani’s death a significant loss and emphasized that the attack was orchestrated by “Khawarij.”
This development comes despite repeated claims by Taliban officials, particularly Zabihullah Mujahid, that ISIS has been defeated in Afghanistan and no longer possesses the capability to conduct attacks against them.
