Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai expressed profound regret over the decision by Taliban leader Mullah Hibatullah to ban girls from pursuing medical education. Karzai urged the Taliban leadership to immediately reverse this decision.
On Wednesday, December 4, Karzai wrote on his social media account that hearing about the closure of medical institutions to Afghan girls, especially at a time when women and mothers across the country face significant health challenges, was deeply saddening.
The former president emphasized that education is the only path to achieving self-reliance and fostering development in various dimensions of the country. He called on the interim Islamic government to reverse the ban on girls’ medical education and to reopen schools and universities for them as soon as possible.
This comes after Mullah Hibatullah, in a surprising announcement on Monday, declared that Afghan girls would no longer be allowed to pursue studies in medical fields. The Taliban’s decision has sparked widespread criticism both domestically and internationally.
