Following significant advances by opposition forces against Bashar al-Assad in Syria, the United States has stated that the ongoing crisis in the country is the result of the Assad regime’s reliance on Iran and Russia.
Sean Savitt, spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, said during a press conference in Washington on Sunday, December 1, that the U.S. is closely monitoring developments in the region and has been in constant communication with regional officials over the past 48 hours. However, he emphasized that Washington has had no role in the recent military developments in Syria.
Savitt further added that the current situation in Syria is a direct consequence of the regime’s refusal to engage in dialogue and its reliance on Moscow and Tehran. “Relying on Moscow and Tehran has created the conditions we are witnessing now,” he stated.
The spokesperson also urged all parties involved to reduce violence and resolve their differences through constructive negotiations.
